Keeping Clutter Undercover

Good morning!

Hope everyone had a fun weekend… on Saturday night we actually had ZERO kids and snapped up the chance to go see “Gone Girl”. It was sooooo good. I haven’t read the book, so I was dying to get to the theatre to see it before the end was spoiled for me. Thankfully I made it there without so much as a hint to what happens – hooray! It’s one of those movies that really sticks with you after you leave – and not just because of Ben Affleck’s 0.5 second full frontal… hahaha.

Definitely check it out, it was great. (The movie!! Get your minds out of the gutter, people!)

So – back to reality, which in my world mainly consists of trying to keep my house clean while simultaneously entertaining my kids and managing their 9173 toys.

Do you ever peruse your favourite blogs and wonder… “Where the hell is all their STUFF?”

I mean their real stuff.. not their magazines and candles and floral arrangements and pieces of drift wood. I know where those are – artfully displayed on coffee tables, buffets and consoles. I mean their CRAP. The toys, the pens, the dvds, the diapers… you know, the stuff they (we all) actually USE! It actually puts me off when I see people on these blogs try to present their home like a house that is magazine ready every moment – it’s like no one actually lives there.

Well, guess what? We live here. So I thought I would make a post sharing where I hide all the goodies. It’s nothing ground breaking, but I’ve gotten creative over the years and with three kids and three pets in this 1600 square foot house, finding spots for everything is hard. So today I am pulling back the curtain – literally – and showing you my dirty secrets!

I’m going to stick with our main living and dining areas, since that’s where I worry most about how things look. I’m not too concerned about toys and “stuff” in the kids’ rooms or in the basement playroom – ya know, cause it’s a play room and stuff. But in the family room I like to try to keep things decent. That basically means lots of hiding junk.

This is what it generally looks like:

I have actuallly changed things around a bit since this photo was taken, but the basics are the same. It’s tidy, but lived in. I do not live in a catalogue and I’m fine with that. But I still like things to look nice! Check this out…

The lovely curtains in the family room? Don’t look behind them!

Yup… behind curtain #1 we have a Mega Blocks table and behind #2 is what we refer to as “Batman Town”. Then I have the curtains in the dining room. If you peek behind one of them you’ll find Cal’s car mat:

Then I have my LOVELY midcentury modern console under the TV… I think this is my favourite piece of furniture in the house. You’d think we store our entertainment stuff in there….

But no… there’s nothing remotely related to the television in there:

Then we head into the dining room, which is where I use my bookcases to the max. (Yup… 1990, baby… to. the. max.)

Love this room... and the secrets it holds!

Let’s take a look at that first photo again:

See the numbers? Let’s take a closer look…

#1 – The 800 pens. I simply took a mason style jar and coiled a pretty piece of paper to line the inside. It’s not even attached, it’s just rolled up in there and hides how junky all those pens look:

#2 – Diaper and wipe storage! Mind you, with my youngest pushing three we don’t go through very many, just a couple of Pull Ups each day, but it’s handy and I still use the wipes for everything. The basket keeps them close but covered – hooray!

#3 – The mosaic glass bowl. Looks like just a pretty decor item, but inside it hides a multitude of sins. My husband’s X-box headphones, little cars that my son uses with his iPad games, lighters for the candles and more!

#4 – DVD storage. Yup. You’d think that we would store them under the TV in the lovely console, but no. My two year old would HAVE AT IT and they would be destroyed. So they need to be kept safe and out of reach:

I also have a small console/buffet in there. At first glance you would think it holds serving ware or bar items, but you’d be wrong…

So there you have it.. some of my secret spots to stash the junk around my home! Part of why I started this blog was to show other moms and women the realness that is motherhood. It has segued a bit since then into home decor, recipes, DIY etc… but the main message is the same: this is life! Life is messy and cluttered and NOT perfect. I don’t ever strive to be a blog that has perfect photos and perfect lighting and perfect evvvvvvverything. I’m basically trying to keep the kids fed and the laundry done.

Even that can be a struggle.
No – I always feed my kids. lol… but the laundry? Well……… ha.

At least this way I can keep the things close that we always use, but at the end of the day it all buttons up pretty nicely.

So tidy! So nice! For now.

I still can’t wait to move, and hopefully then everything will have a REAL place and I won’t have to place this little game of hide and seek. :)
